Pediatric Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy (Ages 4–17)

Bladder and bowel challenges are more common in children and teens than many families realize. Concerns like bedwetting, constipation, or accidents can affect confidence, school participation, sleep, and day-to-day routines.

The good news is that these issues are treatable, and support is available.

At Rooted Family Wellness Centre, we provide gentle, age-appropriate pediatric pelvic floor physiotherapy to help children and adolescents build confidence, improve function, and feel more in control of their bodies.

What is pediatric pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Pediatric pelvic floor physiotherapy focuses on how your child’s bladder, bowel, and core systems are working together.

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that supports bladder and bowel function, but it also works closely with breathing, posture, and movement. When these systems are not well coordinated, it can lead to symptoms like leakage, constipation, or urgency.

Treatment is always adapted to your child’s age, comfort level, and developmental stage.

How this can help your child

We support children and teens experiencing:

  • Bedwetting (nighttime accidents)
  • Daytime urinary leakage
  • Urgency or frequent bathroom trips
  • Constipation or painful bowel movements
  • Stool withholding
  • Bowel accidents
  • Toilet training challenges
  • Difficulty fully emptying the bladder
  • Pelvic discomfort
  • Core weakness affecting bladder or bowel control
  • Sensory or developmental toileting challenges
  • Menstrual-related pelvic discomfort (for teens)

If you’re unsure whether physiotherapy is the right fit, you’re always welcome to reach out or book a free 10-min consultation to talk it through.

Our approach

We know this can be a sensitive topic, for both kids and parents.

Our approach is:

  • Gentle and non-invasive
  • Play-based and age-appropriate
  • Focused on building comfort and trust
  • Practical and realistic for daily life

We take time to understand your child’s routines, habits, and challenges, and we involve parents in a way that feels supportive, not overwhelming.

Internal examinations are not performed in pediatric pelvic physiotherapy.

What to expect at your child’s first visit

The first appointment is focused on understanding your child as a whole.

We’ll talk through:

  • Symptoms and concerns
  • Bathroom routines
  • Daily habits and patterns
  • Developmental history

The assessment may include looking at posture, breathing, movement, and coordination in a comfortable and supportive way.

From there, we create a personalized plan that may include:

  • Bladder and bowel routine support
  • Breathing and relaxation strategies
  • Movement and coordination exercises
  • Simple, practical strategies to use at home

Everything is explained in a way that both you and your child can understand.

Supporting your child at home

Progress often comes from small, consistent changes. We’ll guide you with clear, manageable strategies that fit into your daily routine without adding stress.

You won’t be expected to figure this out on your own, we’ll walk through it together.
