How a Chiropractor Can Help You and Your Baby

Rooted Family Wellness Centre offers holistic services, classes, and community to new and expecting families looking to build strong family foundations.

One of those services that we offer is Chiropractic care that is patient-centred, non-invasive, hands-on, and provided by regulated health care professionals who focus on all aspects of the human body.

Let's explore the top ways a chiropractor can help you and your baby!

1. During Pregnancy

Pregnant people often have posture shifts, resulting in more demand on the body's joints and ligaments. The body's hormones and biomechanics change throughout pregnancy, which can put extra strain on the hips and low back as a result.

Our chiropractors can help to relieve:

  • Back pain
  • Symphysis pubis pain (anterior pelvic pain)
  • Neck or joint pain
  • Sciatica
  • Symptoms associated with pregnancy (nausea).
  • Breech baby

We work to reduce and support the effects of sacral and sacroiliac discomfort to improve the biomechanical function of the sacrum and pelvis. As well, implement strengthening exercises both pre-and post-natal.

2. Breech Babies: The Webster Technique

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and protocol of adjustments and manual therapy to reduce the effects of sacroiliac joint dysfunction, translating to less pain and dysfunction for the pregnant person.

The technique is often recommended for birthing people who have a baby in the breech presentation; however, it is essential to note that this technique does not "flip" the baby. With that being said, there is some evidence that if a mother's pelvis is in an optimal position, it enables the baby to engage in the "head-down" position.

3. Postnatal

Every birth and birthing person's body is different, so our chiropractors implement techniques to help support both you and your baby after birth.

Common conditions that we work to help improve for the birthing person post-birth are:

  • Back & neck pain (carrying a baby can put a lot of stress on your body!)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Weakness or body imbalances
  • Postural adjustments
  • Sciatica pain

4. For Infants

As we work with you and your baby, we have the pleasure of supporting your baby's growth through the various phases of their life.

Common conditions that we work to help improve for babies are:

  • Constipation
  • Ear infections
  • Colic
  • Headaches
  • Breastfeeding Issues (not being able to latch)
  • Torticollis (head tilting to one side)
  • Favouring one side when feeding
  • Poor sleep

Meet Our Chiropractic Team

At Rooted Family, we provide chiropractic care for all family members! Our chiropractic team collaborates with our other practitioners to help you and your family achieve your wellness goals.

Dr. Sarah Bernhardt

Dr. Sarah Bernhardt Rooted Family Wellness Centre

Sarah is passionate about living a healthy and balanced lifestyle and helping others to reach their health goals. She always delivers patient-centred care with a hands-on approach to help restore proper movement, provide pain relief and help prevent future injuries.

"I enjoy working with expectant mothers and infants because even though pregnancy is a temporary phase, there are many ways to optimize your health during this time and create an environment both for yourself and the baby to make it less strenuous on the body. Even the smoothest births can be traumatic for the baby and we want to ensure that their muscles, joints, and nervous system are functioning properly for them to grow, feed, and thrive."

Having a newborn can be a stressful time and if I can improve feeding, sleeping, and the baby's comfort using non-invasive and gentle techniques then it can relieve a lot of stress off of mom so she can also take time to take care of herself.

Dr. Andrea DesGroseilliers

Dr. Andrea DesGroseillers Rooted Family Wellness Centre

Andrea developed an interest in perinatal care around the pregnancy and birth of her first daughter.

"Not only did my body need and benefit from chiropractic care during my pregnancy, but I realized there was a huge gap in information available to the perinatal population. I find it so empowering to be helping people transition to parenthood and educate them about their changing bodies and how symptoms can be managed."

I think all expectant mothers should seek chiropractic care because their bodies are undergoing massive hormonal, biomechanical and emotional changes throughout pregnancy and postpartum, which can all be alleviated by chiropractic care. Additionally, I can provide the proper knowledge and education to help mothers navigate their changing bodies and provide them with helpful tools and strategies for the postpartum healing period.
